Decking options and materials

Still an age-old favorite for decking purposes, pressure-treated lumber is an excellent material for this task. In fact, it is estimated that nearly three-quarters of all decks use this material. The reasons? It’s an affordable option, it’s easy to attain, and it’s easy to manipulate. It does take a bit of maintenance to keep it looking good, which can include a power washing at least once every 12 months, plus additional preservatives when needed.

Both Ipe and Merbau are highly prized for decking, especially since they offer exceptional color and have no added chemicals. They both contain a mixture of oils and tannins that help them to naturally resist many enemies of decks, including decay, rot, and insect infestation. To get the most of these benefits, however, the boards must contain as much heartwood, which comes from the tree’s center, as possible.

Composite decking, along with plastic lumber are quickly gaining popularity for this job. Sold by many manufacturers, you’ll find these products made up of polyethylene and provide extensive color options, without ever needing to paint. Recycled plastic and wood fiber are used to create these materials, making them impeccably resistant to weather, stains, splinters, rotting, and warping.
